All about the Mead Mishaps series
Who is Kimberly Lemming?
Kimberly Lemming is on an eternal quest to avoid her calling as a main character. She can be found giving the slip to that new werewolf that just blew into town and refusing to make eye contact with a prince of a far-off land. Dodging aliens looking for Earth booty can really take up a girl’s time.
But when she’s not running from fate, she can be found writing diverse fantasy romance. Or just shoveling chocolate in her maw until she passes out on the couch.
What is That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon?
Spice trader Cinnamon’s quiet life is turned upside down when she ends up on a quest with a fiery demon, in this irreverently quirky rom-com fantasy that is sweet, steamy, and funny as hell.
All she wanted to do was live her life in peace—maybe get a cat, expand the family spice farm. Really, anything that didn’t involve going on an adventure where an orc might rip her face off. But they say the goddess has favorites, and if so, Cin is clearly not one of them.
After Cin saves the demon Fallon in a wine-drunk stupor, Fallon reveals that all he really wants to do is kill an evil witch enslaving his people. And who can blame him? But now he’s dragging Cinnamon along for the ride whether she likes it or not. On the bright side, at least he keeps burning off his shirt.…
Interview
What was your inspiration for the Mead Mishaps series?
My inspiration for Mead Mishaps came in the form of not seeing anything like it yet. That Time I Got Drunk And Saved A Demon is a love letter to myself, and everyone else who has simply had enough. I was going through a rough patch and was desperate for a book to take me on a fun fantasy adventure. I wanted to see a black girl like me simply going on a fun, steamy adventure and falling in love. I couldn’t find one, so I wrote it myself. One where the ridiculous meets the mundane and a mighty fire-breathing dragon can be brought to heel by something as simple as a stick of cinnamon.
What drew you to writing romance?
Romance has always been a fun escape of mine. There’s something healing in a happily ever after no matter how old you get.
What was your process for writing That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon?
I sort of just winged it. Each day I tried to make sure I sat my butt down in my chair at 9am and wrote anything that came to mind. Eventually, that silly rambling was edited down to make a proper book. Whenever I got stuck, I’d pour a glass of wine or go on a walk until I felt better.
How did you choose which character to focus the story?
I decided right away to tell the story through Cin’s eyes. Learning about the world through the eyes of an average person thrown into calamity is always a fun time for me.
What is your approach to world and character building?
A lot of times a thought will just pop into my head and I’ll run with it. For example, when it came to making the innkeeper Usha, I had an idea for 2 feuding innkeepers, then decided to give them both mascots and brightly colored themes like opposing sports teams. Then I thought about what kind of amenities would exist in a medieval type fantasy world. Hated the idea of medieval hygiene being a thing, and decided magic would be used for indoor plumbing in major cities. Then just kept rolling from there.
Did you have a favourite moment to write in That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon?
Probably the cheese queen incident.
How would you describe the Mead Mishaps series in five words?
Spicy, chaotic, funny, mantic, magical
What was your favourite book growing up?
Dragon Slippers by Jessica Day George
Do you have a favourite genre to read?
Fantasy Romance
