Genre Biography

Guenther Steiner is one of motor racing’s biggest and most celebrated characters, known to millions for his show-stealing appearances on Netflix’s hugely popular fly on the wall series, Drive to Survive.

In Surviving to Drive, the Haas team principal takes readers inside his Formula 1 team for the entirety of the 2022 season, giving an unobstructed view of what really takes place behind the scenes. Through this unique lens, Guenther takes us on the thrilling rollercoaster of life at the heart of high stakes motor racing.

Packed full of twists and turns, from hiring and firing drivers, balancing books, pre-season preparations, the design, launch and testing of a car – and of course, the race calendar itself – this is the first time that an F1 team has allowed an acting team principal to tell the full story of a whole season.

Uncompromising and searingly honest, told in Steiner’s inimitable style, this is a fascinating and hugely entertaining account of the realities of running a Formula 1 team.

What is Surviving the Drive by Guenther Steiner about?

Surviving to Drive offers an inside look at the Haas Formula 1 team during the 2022 season, guided by team principal Guenther Steiner. The book provides an unfiltered perspective on the challenges of managing a high-stakes racing team, covering everything from driver hires and departures to financial struggles, car design, testing, and the race schedule. It’s the first time an F1 team principal has shared the complete behind-the-scenes story of an entire season.

My thoughts on Surviving the Drive

In Surviving to Drive, Guenther Steiner shares a candid, diary-style account of his year as the Team Principal of Haas, Formula 1’s only American team. Gaining fame through Drive to Survive, Guenther offers an intimate look at how Haas was built, along with a detailed look at his own racing career, from rallying to Formula 1.

Fans of the Netflix series will recognize his signature no-filter style, including plenty of colorful language that he fully embraces. With short, punchy chapters, the book is a quick and enjoyable read—though the audiobook, narrated by Guenther himself, is a must for an even more personal touch. It’ll have you laughing out loud, and trust me, you won’t regret it!
