What is a Reading Slump and How to Get Out of One

20 books to read to get you out of a reading slump

Hello fellow readers! Welcome back to my bookshelf!

Have you ever been reading and suddenly you’re just not feeling it anymore? You may have the cruelest thing in the bookish world a reading slump. In this post I’ll explain what a reading slump is, ways to get out of the slump and 20 books I’ve read that got me out of a reading slump.

What is a reading slump?

A reading slump is a phase where your interest in reading plummets, affecting even your favourite fiction or non-fiction series. You’re just stuck. These slumps are frustrating because you might want to read, but everything else seems to distract you from the words on the page.

What causes a reading slump

There are different causes of reading slumps and most of the time it doesn’t always make sense. Here are some causes to a reading slump:

  1. Reading multiple books all at once.
  2. Picking up complex reads that are very dense (I’m slowly making my way through Empire of the Vampire again)
  3. Trying to read a book you don’t like.
  4. Big life changes (new job or moving etc)
  5. Reading to many books of the same genre.

There are so many other things that could cause a reading slump but sometimes you just go through a phase of not getting into books.

Ways to break a reading slump

Here are some ways that have helped me break my reading slump.

Pick up smaller books

If I have been stuck on one book for a while I switch to a shorter book or even a novella to give my brain a break.

Try out an audiobook

If you can’t concentrate on reading maybe you can concentrate on listening to a book.

reread a favourite

I’m always quick to reread one of the books I know I’ve loved to get me in the mood for reading again.

Find a book that you are interested in reading

Don’t pick a book that is supposed to be good for you but a book that you want to pick up and read.

Change reading formats

There are many different formats to consume books. Try changing the format of the book you want to consume.

experiment with genres

Maybe the genre you were reading put you in the slump so changing up the genre and trying something new may light the spark to read again.

6. Swipe for a cosmo by megan wade

I’m not the kind of girl to use dating apps. But after struggling to find love in the real world, I caved and downloaded that one where you swipe left or right depending on how you feel about someone. I wasn’t expecting much.

Then I got myself a date and my hope levels lifted. I put on my favorite dress, drove to a bar in the middle of nowhere that served nothing but wings and whatever was on tap for this guy. And then…he didn’t even bother showing up.

Sure, I was disappointed. I was even a little humiliated as I sat there alone, wondering if he’d seen me from afar then decided my true size was more then he could handle. But I wasn’t shocked.

Until the hottest man I’ve ever seen in my life sat opposite me and asked if he could be my date instead.

And that’s where my real love story starts.

I might have swiped for a man offering empty promises, but what I got was a gorgeous bartender holding a cosmo in his hand and a good time in his gaze. And I was going to make the most of it…

9. the takeover by t.l. swan

I first met Tristan Miles at a meeting where he was trying to take over my late husband’s company.

He was powerful, arrogant, and infuriatingly gorgeous, and I hated him with every cell in my body. In the shock of the century, he called me three days later and asked me on a date.

I would rather die than date a man like him—though I do have to admit it was good for the ego. Turning him down was the highlight of my year.

Six months later, he was the guest speaker at a conference I attended in France.

Still arrogant and infuriating—but this time, surprisingly charming and witty.

When he looked at me, I got butterflies.

But I can’t go there.

He’s just a player in a hot suit, and I’m just a widow with three unruly sons.

I just need this conference to be over.

Because everybody knows that Tristan Miles always gets what he wants…and what he wants is me.

18. break out by kylie kent

Liam

That feeling you get skating across the ice, legs burning, adrenaline pumping. It’s unmatched. Much like my current stats.

Hockey has always been my sole focus, getting to the playoffs, winning the Stanley Cup—that’s my number one goal.

I won’t let the fact that I’ve just been traded to a new team derail my future. Nor will the daughter of the so-called King of Canada, aka my new boss. Aliyah, the gorgeous, feisty brunette who’s just been assigned as my official “babysitter.”

Although, when you’re trapped in a room with a temptation like her, there’s only so much restraint one man can have.

I probably should have listened to the rumors about the owner of the Vancouver Knights being Canada’s most ruthless and feared mob boss. Because when he finds out what I’ve done with his daughter, it’s not just my career on the chopping block.

It’s my neck.

Both, I’m willing to risk. For her. To save her.

Aliyah

When your whole life is mapped out for you, choices aren’t a freedom you’re granted.

You do whatever it is you’re told to do.

So, when my father tells me he needs me to watch over one of his new recruits, even though spending all of my free time with a cocky-ass hockey player is the last thing I want to be doing, I agree.

Why?

Because nobody says no to Jacob Monroe and lives to tell the tale. Not even me.

I mean, how hard can it be? It’s one guy. A hockey player.

Liam King. An athlete with a physique carved out of stone, and a smirk that not only melts my panties off but sets my whole body on fire.

An inferno I can’t help but give in to and a desire I can’t help but feed.

He’s not part of the plan. He’s temporary. Dropping in and passing by. I just need to get my heart to understand that I can’t keep him.

No matter how much I might want to.

19. wall st grouch by megan wade

-Mia-
I know better than to mix business with pleasure, but when I meet brooding billionaire Brody Harrington, our intense chemistry is impossible to resist. As one of New York’s most successful venture capitalists, Brody seems adamant to keep our relationship casual. But the more time we spend together, the more confused I become about where this is going.

Brody is struggling with his own demons, fighting his growing feelings by watching me instead of taking me. He’s a man who doesn’t like not being in control.

When he demands I quit dancing to be with him exclusively, I refuse to compromise my independence or give up my dreams for any man.

I don’t know if he sees me as more than just a casual lover or if I’ll just get my heart broken. All I know is that being with Brody makes me feel truly alive in a way nothing else has before.

-Brody-
For years, I’ve sworn off relationships, convinced that getting close only leads to pain. But from the moment I meet spirited dancer Mia, she ignites a desire in me that I can’t ignore. Our chemistry is undeniable, yet allowing myself to care for her terrifies me. I try pushing her away to protect us both, but being apart is its own kind of agony.

Mia is like no one I’ve ever known before. She sees through my gruff exterior to the man beneath and challenges me to be better. Spending time with her makes me feel alive in a way I haven’t in forever. But opening my heart also means risking loss, and that’s not a chance I’ve been willing to take.
Not until now.
Mia is changing everything, whether I’m ready or not.
