Interview

What was your inspiration for Soul of A Wolf and the rest of the Brothers of Scrim Hall series?

I had recently been involved in a multi-author series called Monster Between the Sheets. The series was so much fun and writing Dragon of My Dreams inspired me to think about other monsters whom I’d love to create romantic characters for.

I loved how, for me, it became about perception and acceptance, and I wanted more of that kind of book. First, I thought of the father figure first (Wentworth Pettigrew) and then built a family from there.

What drew you to writing romance?

The first time I wrote a short story it was science fiction and so much fun. I’d always been a storyteller, making up elaborate imaginary worlds and acting out the scenes as a child. When I realized I could actually write them down for other people to read, it was a revelation.

As far as why romance, it’s the happily ever after. I love the notion that no matter what happens at the beginning or the middle, somehow, we’re climbing toward a satisfying conclusion. The real world isn’t always filled with HEAs, so why not create worlds that are?

What was your process for writing for Soul of a Wolf?

When I start any story, it will start with an opening scene in my head first. For Soul of a Wolf, the image of Lucinda arriving in Silas’s garden and his catching her scent popped into my mind a few books earlier, while I was writing Soul of a Vampire.

I always write in order, so Silas had to wait. I jotted down the note about the scene and went on with the series in order. Many authors write out of order, but I can’t do that. I have to tell the story as it happens. Even when I’m writing and a later scene comes to me, I’ll make a note in the manuscript and write it when the time is right.

What was your process for character and world building?

For me, Worldbuilding is organic. Usually, the elements of a world come to me as I’m writing the first few chapters. In the case of the Brothers of Scrim Hall, I knew about Wentworth first. He built a world where adopting six monster children created a family.

After that, I gather lore about the different monsters and decide how that works in my story. Maybe it does, and maybe it doesn’t. That’s the fun of writing paranormal or fantasy romances.

How would you describe Soul of A Wolf in five words?

Fun action-packed sexy romance

Did you have a favourite moment to write?

Honestly, I always love the beginning. The moment when the page is blank, the story is jostling to get out of my mind and onto the page, is pure joy for me.

I love writing books and telling a great story, but starting them is a thrill.

What was your favourite book growing up?

Anne of Green Gables, Hello God, It’s Me, Margaret, Johnathan Livingston Seagull (in college I read it a dozen times)  I was addicted to Star Trek books for a few years.

Do you have a favourite genre to read?

I mostly read romance, but I love history too. I read a lot of historical romance, some contemporary romance. Fantasy and paranormal are always fun to dive into.
