Interview
What was your inspiration for Her Favourite Jack-O-Lantern?
Halloween and my desire to be a cute goth girl. I have many styles and simple goth has always been one of them and I wish I could be that dedicated to one aesthetic all the time. Also my husband told me about the town Laconia and how they have a giant pumpkin festival every year. Which is why it takes place there and there’s so many pumpkins everywhere.
What was your inspiration for Pinky Promise?
Honestly my main inspiration was the trope grumpy/sunshine and the color pink. That’s where I started when writing Pinky Promise. Everything kind of evolved from there. I basically took my love of travel and secret desire to be a nomad myself and wrote the character I wanted to be.
What drew you to writing romance and rom-coms?
I always loved the romantic relationships in books even if they weren’t strictly romance, so I started reading more romance books. I’ve always had a great imagination and used to play this game making up stories for strangers walking down the street. From that I started daydreaming my own stories which were always romance stories. Prior to publishing I had started writing just for fun and one day realized that Indie authors actually could do really well especially with tik tok and instagram and was like “Hey I could try it and see how it goes.”
I actually started writing in dark romance and romantasy and it was after writing the intense deep romantasy that I took a break and wrote pinky promise, just for fun. Turns out that’s probably where I should have been writing the whole time.
How did you choose which character to centre the story around?
The main characters just kind of come to me. I have no control over them. 🙂 With the Gummy Bear Orgy, the color inspires the theme and then the character develops after that. Creating someone whom I think would be in that setting or theme. Some are ideas I just had randomly and thought would be fun character that I then created the story around.
What was your process for writing Pinky Promise?
I use the same process with every book. I come up with the theme and setting and trope and general idea of the plot, then I develop the characters. Giving them background stories, decide their style and personality type, their families, any insecurities or quirks. As well as basic things like favorite foods, movies, music, dislikes and likes and random stuff like what kind of shoes they wear. Once I fully know my characters I’ll brainstorm the story. Usually out of order and randomly and write them all down in my note book that I use for the book. Once the story starts writing itself in my head and I can’t ignore it I start actually writing. I write sequentially in order. I can’t hop around the story while writing because things get mixed up if I do, and then I can’t remember if something happened before or after.
Did it change for Her Favourite Jack-O-Lantern?
Nope I use the same process for all my books now that I’ve discovered my style.
What is your approach to world and character building?
I use pinterest to get inspiration for characters and world building. Usually I have an idea of what I want but I try not to force it, I like to let ideas and inspiration come naturally. It just doesn’t work if I force it which is why I don’t always know what’s coming next because I’m a mood writer and I write what is currently swimming around the swamp that is my brain.
How would you describe Her Favourite Jack-O-Lantern in five words?
spooky-sweet-spicy-cozy-fun
Did you have a favourite moment in the book to write?
I always love the beginning. How they meet and how they fall in love.
What was your favourite book growing up?
Super cliche but Pride & Prejudice. I read that book so much along with almost every other Jane Austin book. I was also a huge fan of Steven King.
Do you have a favourite genre to read?
Romance anything. I always care more about the relationship between the characters than if they’re saving their country or winning the war. So I like books that focus on the characters first and the rest of it second.
