Author Spotlight: Interview with Marion De Re

All about the novel Resisting My Boss

Who is Marion De Re

Marion De Ré is an author of swoony closed-door romantic comedies. She lives in the French countryside with her husband and adorable cat. You can expect all your beloved tropes in her writing as well as a good dose of humor and all the feels. When she’s not reading or writing, you can find her on a plane to a far-away destination or in a Champagne cellar, indulging in a tasting of her favorite drink.

What is Resisting My Boss?

The minute my new boss steps foot in the conference room, my dream job turns into a nightmare.

Jude Reed and I already met.
Last night. In a bar.
We danced. We kissed. I ditched him…
Let’s just say I’m not ready to be a carefree city girl yet. And let’s just say Mr. Reed holds a grudge.

Working for Jude is not what I signed up for, and he won’t be winning Boss of the Year anytime soon. Between his sky-high expectations and cryptic explanations, he has the entire office on their toes.

“Grumpy” doesn’t begin to describe him.

Or so I thought…

Because the more time I spend around him, the more his tough exterior crumbles, revealing someone as sweet as his secret baking talent.

There’s a reason he plays an intimidating role that strikes fear into his employees, but just knowing there’s a caring man behind the mask doesn’t mean I’m suited to be anything more than his assistant.

No matter how irresistible he is.

Interview

What was your inspiration for Resisting My Boss?

So, my inspiration for Resisting My Boss comes from my deep love of rom-coms. Like every romcom movie, it’s set in a big city (London here) and in an office (fashion magazine). I really wanted to write a story set in London. It’s the city I visited the most in my life and one I particularly love. And I’ve always wanted to write a book in the fashion world so this was the perfect combination. Also, Jude’s inspiration came from the actor Henry Cavill.

What drew you to writing romance?

Like many authors, I started writing because I couldn’t find the exact book I wanted to read. I was looking for a popstar romcom and I must have read at least fifty, but I was never satisfied. Eventually, I decided to write it and the Only Girl trilogy was born. As for romance specifically, I’ve been reading rom-coms since I was a teen so, I naturally turned to that genre.

How did you choose which character to focus the story?

Resisting My Boss is told in both POV, but I suppose in every story there is a main(er) character and in this case it’s Lina. Again, this was very natural for me. Lina was introduced in Hating Thy Neighbor, the first book of the series, and she was the one moving to a new country and facing new challenges.

What is your approach to world and character building?

I like setting my stories in big cities because that’s what feels “rom-comy” to me and there’s plenty of opportunities for dates and the bustling of the city adds to the general tension.

As for character building, that’s where I usually start. I get the idea for a character, their personalities, flaws, past or quirks and it gets the ball rolling. Then, the love interest comes naturally to complement the other.

Did you have a favourite moment to write in Resisting My Boss?

This one is tough. When I write, I tend to see things very vividly, like I’m watching a movie in my head so I’m always very immersed in the story. Every moment is fun to write. But, I probably smiled the most while writing the baking/food fight scenes. Though I really love the snarky banter at the beginning when they’re alone at the office for the first time. Oh and the meet-cute. See, it’s impossible to choose!

How would you describe Resisting My Boss in five words?

Again, tough one. Us writers are more comfortable writing a 60,000 words book than describing it in a few words LOL. But I guess I could do: British, Swoony, Fashion, Baking, Love?

What was your favourite book growing up?

My favorite series and the one that really hooked me into reading was Harry Potter. I devoured each book as they came out, reading all day long until I finished. But, along with Twilight, they’re the only fantasy books I’ve ever read. Then I switched to YA romcoms like Gossip Girl and then Rom-Com or Chick Lit as they were called back then, and fell in love with authors like Sophie Kinsella, Mindy Klasky, Wendy Markham or Lauren Weisberger.

Do you have a favourite genre to read?

You guessed it by now! Rom-com is my jam! And even if I write closed door books (steamy kisses that fade to black), I read across heat levels
