What is Tails of Battle about?

In a world of humans, elves, animal humanoids and more, the struggle for power, vengeance, and justice is vast. The young fox Jakama of the free lands seeks justice and to bring down the mighty emperor Ceezar, the jaguar. When both sides are threatened by religious fanatic humans attempting to exterminate the sins known as the animals, the two must come together in the search for the giants or kill one another first. Each has deeper reasons for what they do and each has a part to play in the clash of swords, shields, axes, and wits. Blood, politics, adventure, and love along with the struggle for acceptance, change, and to do better fill the journey for each character. Real life issues plague some of the side characters and the exciting banter between bore and fox bring comedic relief. There is violence and possibly triggering content.

Interview

What was your inspiration for Tails of Battle?

I am not totally sure even. I was working at a convenient store at night and it just kind of happened. I mean I loved Redwall when I was younger so that had some influence. I mean pieces of it were influenced by genocides, different points of personality within me. Hopes, but also the sheer joy of creating.

What drew you to writing?

I was born unable to hear when I was really young. Luckily some surgeries and what not cleared that up. Writing always came more natural for me. I also love to create and my professor Mrs. Merman swayed me to switch to an English major. Poetry was always my outlet so I just love writing that.

How did you choose which character to centre the story around?

I had an idea when I first started about a young rebel character with a large learning curve. Ceezar [the jaguar] was originally just supposed to be a ruthless enemy and somehow became the center along with Jakama [the fox]. I just fell in love with something about him and he grew  while I was writing.

What was your process for writing Tails of Battle?

I never plan anything.  I just went with it. I let the story tell itself and I got to go along with it. I had multiple beta readers along the way and many rounds of edits. Those were the tedious parts of the process but writing itself. It was all hand written and then typed out after which I feel gave it a more authentic vibe.

What is your approach to world and character building?

Character building for me is just fun. I kind of let the characters build themselves. It’s just a feeling for me when I write. World building is a giant mess. My approach is to try to make it relatable but also fantastical. I travel a lot so I try to utilize that.

How would you describe Tails of Battle?

I would describe it as an exciting adventure in a fantasy world that’s relatable with characters that go through real issues. Of course, with the addition of swords and bloodshed. It is a world of love, betrayal, heartache, despair, torture, passion, and more. I would say it is a wild ride with characters you can really love and feel for.

Did you have a favourite moment in the book to write?

In general I would say the beginning. I love set up. In this specific book I can’t spoil it, but it is when someone loses their love.

What was your favourite book growing up?

Redwall until I hit college. Then it became Anthem by Ayn Rand. I also am a huge fan of Uncle Tom’s Cabin and now A Song of Ice and Fire.

Do you have a favourite genre to read?

I really love historical fiction. I have a deep respect for people who write it. I think it is so intricate and amazing how they weave a story into real life history.
