Author Spotlight: Interview with Jennifer J Williams

Thank you so much to Jennifer for letting me do an author interview! It was fantastic finding out more of the Forever Sunshine series!

Interview

What was your inspiration for the Forever Sunshine series?

I don’t really plan a lot before I begin a story, other than having a general idea of the tropes I’d like to hit and the overall mood of the main characters. The only thing I knew for sure was that I wanted to write characters that were older. So many books these days include main characters in their early 20’s. Not only is that not the age range I enjoy reading, but I also just don’t think I can get in the mentality of someone half my age!

What was your process for writing a dual pov story?

I found it easier to write the male characters than the female ones, actually. It has been incredibly fun getting into the mind frame of the opposite sex. I do ask my husband for opinions to ensure I’ve not crossed any lines with what I “think” a guy would say or do.

How did your main character develop over the course of brainstorm to actually writing the novel?

I used to roll my eyes when I’d read an author newsletter or interview where they would say something about the character not talking to them or the character leading them in a different direction that they didn’t anticipate. I thought there was no way this was accurate. Now I understand! In the writing world, we talk about whether you are a “planner” or a “pantser,” meaning you fly by the seat of your pants and have no idea what will happen next. I’m definitely the latter. I really have no idea what may happen until my imagination starts taking over.

What was your process for character and world building?

I live in Colorado, and I knew I wanted to create a small town based off one of my favorite locations here called Manitou Springs. It’s where my husband proposed, it’s where we had our very short honeymoon before he deployed, and we’ve taken our children there countless times. As for characters, I knew I wanted men who fall HARD, and for their women to be sassy with smart mouths. I tend to take some inspiration from people I see on social media. For example, a random guy from New York City showed up on my TikTok page last autumn, and he only made videos about how men could wear suits, and how they could style certain colors for different events. I already knew I wanted Owen (Forever Ours, book 3) to be a man who enjoyed fashion and almost always wore a suit. I watched a ton of videos and added lots of details into Owen’s story based on what that Tiktokker said.

How would you describe Forever Sunshine series in five words?

Spicy Dad Grump Found Family

Did you have a favourite moment to write?

Yes, but it’s right at the end of the book, and if I tell you it gives away a huge piece of storyline!

What was your favourite book growing up?

I loved the Berenstain Bears series, The Babysitter’s Club, Little Women, Little House on the Prairie, and so many more. I’ve always been an avid reader. Writing takes up most of my time now, but the year before I started writing, I read 400 books. It thrills me to no end that I can create stories that bring others happiness, joy, or just something to pass the time with as they relax after a chaotic day. ❤️

What is your favourite genre to read?

Favorite genre is definitely contemporary. While there are times that I enjoy a dark romance, I love when I can escape into a book that allows me to imagine myself as the lead. Life is complicated enough, so relaxing for a fun and silly read is one of my favorite ways to unwind and relax.
