Thank you so much Megan for letting me interview you about your debut novel The Anatomy of Songs.
Interview
What was your inspiration for The Anatomy of Songs?
Studying physiology and realising the facts could be used for both good and ill. Knowledge is power, and a magic of its own.
What was your process for writing your debut novel?
Drafting >>> structurally editing myself >>> rewriting >>> beta readers >>> rewriting >>> querying
It was a long journey (6 years). I learnt integral craft through courses such as creative writing stage one (AWC), Tomi Adyemis Writers Roadmap and editing tools- check out Susan Dennards blog.
How did your main character develop over the course of brainstorm to actually writing the novel?
Kasira (FMC) developed in the initial brainstorming of the story premise, her character arc was pretty clear from the get go. Although I learnt more as the story continued and she reacted to events.
Veridian’s (MMC) POV developed in later drafts as I realised there was another side to the story. His arc was less clear and required much more deliberate exploration eg. Motivation, background, flaws, talents, family/friends and beliefs etc.
What was your process for character and world building?
For characters I begin with their greatest desire and the flaw preventing them from having it.
For world building I lean into the themes of the book and any beliefs the people of the world have. Eg. religion or themes such as father/daughter relationships, struggle and sacrifice and see how those things affect the world.
How would you describe The Anatomy of Songs in five words?
Who/what is worth sacrificing for?
Or
Healer by day, assassin by night (can I have 6 please?)
What was your favourite book growing up?
I adored the Rangers Apprentice series by John Flanagan. Archery, family, adventure!
What is your favourite genre to read?
Always fantasy. Give me a strong female lead! But I do love a sci-fi, if it’s in space even better.
